FBC member in the spotlight - Meet our Honorary Chairman Jaana Räsänen-Pentti

1.Can you share your story of living in Dubai and how you got involved with the Finnish Business Council?

Upon arriving in the UAE in 2008, I worked for twenty years, assisting Finnish companies in going international, most recently at H&K Strategies. Therefore, joining the FBC was a logical landing pad to meet like-minded individuals and companies. I quickly became part of the Board and have since lost count of the years served as Vice Chair, Chair, or Honorary Chair, either steering or supporting. The most significant contribution, in my opinion, has been engaging influential Finnish business people in our goals and persuading them to join the Board of Directors. In a voluntary setting, you can't boss anybody around; you can only inspire and be inspired by them. Recruiting the right administrative people is also key to our success. The role demands a volunteering spirit because, in tough times, it truly feels more like a calling.

2.What changes have you witnessed in the Finnish Business Council's growth?

Indeed, the FBC has evolved significantly, though no revolution was necessary. As Dubai experienced substantial growth from 2010 onwards, the FBC also made concerted efforts to foster growth on multiple fronts – more members, sponsors, resources, attractive activities, and increased social media outreach. We developed a robust strategy, initiated a systematic process of surveying members' needs, created communication tools, and focused on strong business-oriented activities through seminars and events. Despite the challenges posed by Covid, we adapted by operating online and maintaining a social media presence. However, there are surprisingly many new residents who have yet to hear about the FBC.

3.What impact has the Finnish Business Council had on business ties between Finland and the UAE?

This is a challenging question, and measuring the value of our impact is not straightforward. We connect people and businesses, fostering knowledge transfer between emerging companies and those with more experience. Collaboration with Business Finland and the Embassy is crucial, but it's susceptible to changes in personnel. We must work hard to make co-existence beneficial for everyone and not miss opportunities for companies entering or already established in the market. Despite the challenges, FBC remains a steady presence on the ground, engaging in important voluntary work in trade promotion that, in my opinion, should receive some governmental support. Collaborations with Business Finland on Finnspace and co-organizing events with the Finnish Embassy, such as celebrating Finland's 100th anniversary, have been notable successes.

4. Any success stories or collaborations from the Council that stand out for you personally?

In addition to the above, we've established traditions like the annual Golf Championship tournament and Xmas party, which attract a steady crowd. However, attracting high-caliber individuals to work for our common goals is a significant success. The current Board and our energetic executive duo, Erika and Sanna, have played vital roles in keeping FBC and the brand fresh and interesting.

5.What do you see in the future for the Finnish Business Council in Dubai?

The future looks bright, with more companies targeting the market and existing members retaining their memberships. Despite challenging years due to Covid, FBC has advanced and even added administrative resources to maintain a high level of activities. The working relationship with Business Finland and the Embassy is promising. However, changes in the directives of the Administrative Committee at Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry may pose challenges, as Committee members must represent Dubai-based firms, while FBC is inherently the Finnish Business Council in the UAE. The future will reveal which aspects will need to change.

FBC Members in the spotlight - Meet Jani Hardén Area Security Manager at Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä is a global leader in innovative technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets. We emphasise innovation in sustainable technology and services to help our customers continuously improve environmental and economic performance. Our dedicated and passionate team of 17,800 professionals in more than 280 locations in 79 countries shape the decarbonisation transformation of our industries across the globe. In 2023, Wärtsilä’s net sales totalled EUR 6.0 billion. (https://www.wartsila.com/)

1.  What sort of positions have you held before starting as Security Manager for Wärtsilä Middle East and Asia?

I am a former police officer with quite extensive experience across the organisation as well as some international deployments both in Finnish military and Police. I first joined Wärtsilä at their main offices in Vaasa as a global security manager for Wärtsilä Energy Business.
After spending 5 years in Vaasa an opportunity opened up in Dubai and I started working as a Area Security Manager here in Dubai.

2. What is the most interesting thing about your current job?
Being part of a wider organisation and enabling the company to meet the world’s increased demand for energy in a sustainable way.
Also the region under my responsibility is very diverse and there is always something going on that needs to be attended, taking security in consideration. Like stated we are working almost every corner of the world, over 280 locations.

3. What has been the most challenging position you have had throughout your career and why?
I think it is the position I first took in Wärtsilä. Jumping out from a governmental environment to a highly passionate and fast-paced business operation with tight schedules. Having the opportunity to create processes, documentation, guidelines and plans of security operations for the business. Also, all operations had to be done taking in consideration that they need to meet business targets as well (correctly scaled, quality checked and controlled, audited and certified). The learning curve was quite steep and lot of hours were put in.

4. What would your dream day look like?
A dream and purpose is always to aim for zero security related incidents or occurrences. If all operations are well planned and organised we most of the times reach the target. Also getting feedback on the successful operations that have been enabling company operations is always a positive thing and gives the boost to go forward.

FBC Members in the spotlight - meet Anni Timonen from Radisson Blu

1. What brought you to the UAE, and to your current position as Cluster Hotel Manager at Radisson Blu?

Back in 2014 I was working in Stockholm, Sweden at Radisson Collection Strand Hotel when our headquarters in Brussels called me about an opening as a Hotel EAM (Deputy to General Manager) at one of our Dubai hotels. Few flights and 5 weeks later my container landed in Dubai!

2. How does a perfect workday look like for you?

Day comes to a perfect start as long as I can get an hour of weight lifting or running in before heading to office. With 3 kids, a dog and 638 rooms in operation across the 2 hotels, this is not always possible, but I do aim to exercise 4-5 days a week.

3. What is the most interesting thing about your job?

The action. I manage 2 extremely busy hotels in Business Bay, the heart of Dubai. We have visitors from across the world, and anything can and does happen at any given time. As a strategic head of the hotels I don’t always talk to the guests as much as I would like to, but I do spend a lot of time resolving problems both in realtime and pro-actively. The hotels never sleep! (And with 2 smaller kids neither do I…)

4. What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned in your career?

My career started as a GM in a Michelin star restaurant in Sweden, and with that came ability to work under high pressure and set standards extremely high for myself, which under these distinct circumstances is not always feasible long term. I’ve had to learn to take time for myself and to organise my time between work and home, for the sake of my health and my family.

 5. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years time?

Most probably still within 5-star hotels, as as a General Manager or in a Regional role. With my background in luxury segments, that is where I would like to see myself in the future. But as a hobby and a retirement plan I am preparing my real estate portfolio with units for both short and longterm rental.

6. What do you like to do when you are not at work?

Apart from my family and my exercise routine, our family participates yearly in trips to Africa to build water and school facilities to underprivileged children. Planning of these trips is both exciting and rewarding, and last year I was the Project Manager for our school and water project in Uganda. This year we are hoping to travel to Mozambique!
